How to make shampoo concentrate

Hate plastic bottles but love a liquid shampoo? Our shampoo concentrates are ready to be your new in-shower best friend! Bold claim, but we’re sticking to it!

One box makes 350ml of liquid shampoo to ensure you look like you just stepped out of a salon – all without the plastic waste.

The best part? They’re easy peasy and very fun to make. Make our shampoo concentrates with three very simple steps:

How to make

  1. Pour entire contents of box into a heat-proof jug.
  2. Add 300ml (10.14 fl.oz.) of just-boiled water and gently stir till with a fork until the powder has dissolved. The key word here is *gently*. Otherwise, you’ll get a whole lotta foam on your bench that you’ll then need to deal with.
  1. Allow it to cool slightly, then pour the mixture into a bottle you already own and pop a label on it. Give it a few shakes while it’s cooling.

Once made, use your liquid shampoo within six months.

Ta da! There you have it. You’ve made your new favourite liquid shampoo, without any plastic waste.

How to make conditioner concentrate

If you struggle with conditioner bars, the great news is that you can now make liquid conditioner at home with three very simple steps!

How to make 350ml of our conditioner concentrates:

  1. Pop entire powder contents into a heat-proof jug.
  2. Add 320ml (10.82 fl. oz.) of boiling water and mix vigorously with a whisk. Mix until fully melted. For extra creaminess, give it a burst with a stick blender!
  3. Allow to cool slightly (don’t leave it too long), then pour into a bottle you already own. It won't thicken up immediately, so leave for an hour or two to reach perfect consistency. Don’t forget to pop a label on it so you don’t mix it up!

How good does it feel to have made up a liquid conditioner right at home, without any plastic waste?

Once made up, make sure to use your liquid conditioner within six months.

How to make bodywash concentrate

Soap-free and pH balanced, our new and improved bodywash concentrates are made with gentle plant-derived surfactants that cleanse skin without drying. How? We’ve popped in a cheeky bit of fairly traded babassu oil which nourishes for soft, smooth skin.

Whip up 350ml of bodywash right at home with three very simple steps:

How to make

  1. Pour entire contents of box into a heat-proof jug.
  2. Add 300ml (10.14 fl. oz.) of just-boiled water (trust us on this one... make sure it’s just-boiled) and gently stir with a fork until the powder has dissolved. Now don’t go too wild on the stirring, unless you want to have a whole lot of foam you need to clean up, that is.
  3. Allow to cool slightly, then pour into a bottle you already own and pop a label on it. Shake a few times whilst cooling.

Done! You've made your very own liquid bodywash at home, without any plastic waste.

How to make hand and body lotion concentrate

Unlike our other power-to-liquid Concentrates, our new and improved hand and body lotion concentrates remain in blocks, so they do require just a little bit more effort to make.

The formula has been updated so they are easier to make compared to the first lot of Concentrates and, of course, the result is a creamier, dreamier consistency you’ll love.

Make 350ml of our hand and body lotion concentrates with three very simple steps:

How to make

  1. Snap both blocks into triangles and pop into a heat-proof jug.
  2. Add 300ml (10.14 fl. oz.) of boiling water and whisk vigorously with a whisk. Mix until fully melted. For extra creaminess and dreaminess, give it a burst with a stick blender!
  3. Allow it to cool slightly, then pour into a bottle (or two) you already own. It won't thicken up immediately, so leave for an hour or two to reach perfect consistency.

Done! You've made your very own liquid hand and body lotion at home, all without any plastic waste.

Once made up, make sure to use your liquid lotion within six months. Don’t forget to pop a label on to make sure there is zero chance of it being mistaken for mayo (trust us on this one).

Frequently Asked Concentrate Questions

What happens if there are lumps in the mixture?

Simply grab a whisk or a fork and stir them together. If the mixture has cooled with lumps, you may need to add a very very small amount (approx. 20ml) of boiling water to work the product together a little better or better yet, pop it in a microwave-safe container and pop it in the microwave for ten seconds at a time.

Can you put the concentrate mixture in the microwave if it doesn't liquify?

Yes, you can! If your concentrate has cooled down without melting fully, you can gently reheat the concentrates mixture in a microwave-safe container with ten second blasts in the microwave and stir till fully melted.

Can you turn any Ethique bar into liquid?

It’s a hard no on this one. Why? Our Concentrates contain preservatives meaning they are specially formulated to be safe for use as liquids. Our bars don’t contain preservatives so you’re essentially welcoming bacteria.

Can essential oils be added to the unscented concentrates?

Yes, you can but don’t add more than 3.5ml.

Can smaller batches be made?

If 350mls of product sounds like too much for you to use in 6 months, the great news is that you can make however much you like so long as the ratio stays the same.

Want 175ml? Make half the concentrate with half the water.

Want 87.5ml? Mix 1/4 of the concentrate with 1/4 of the water, and so on.

Our Concentrates have been carefully formulated to be safe as liquids with the correct water/product ratio mentioned on the packaging, so just make sure you're sticking to the same ratio and you'll be good to go.
